Altidore shines but USA only ties Honduras

Jozy Altidore played with confidence and poise against Honduras and scored a goal in the 10th minute.

It was exactly what everybody wanted to see out of target striker Jozy Altidore, but far from what everybody wanted to see out of everybody else in the team’s 1-1 draw against Honduras.

Altidore played with confidence, positioned himself well, showed his strength, showed his vision and ability to perfectly place a shot into the back of the net past the goalkeeper, especially in the 10th minute when he games the US National Team their only goal of the game.

Mix Diskerud gathered a lose ball in the midfielder, played it to Michael Bradley and he hit it diagonally to Altidore, who was one-on-one with Honduran defender Victor Bernardez. Altidore took short touches to move the ball around Bernardez and once he got inside he ripped it low and inside the near post past Kevin Hernandez.

It was Altidore’s only shot but he knew exactly where the defense was, exactly where he needed to be and capped it off with a beautiful strike of the ball.

Despite the team going with more of an offensive lineup, featuring Clint Dempsey up front along with Bradley playing a central attacking role and the always dangerous Graham Zusi and the speedy Alejandro Bedoya on the outside, the Yanks were out-shot 12-10 by their CONCACAF foe.

That sort of offensive lineup was good on paper but not good in practice. Honduras had way too much space to run, move and pass the ball around. It was such an issue Jermaine Jones, who was moved from the midfield to the back line was forced to commit and obvious foul just to prevent Romell Quioto from getting a clear line to the goal.

Eventually, in the 85th minute Diskerud, who was playing a central defensive midfielder position, had to tackle Marvin Chavez from behind so he could not work in space but the free kick that came of it was even worse.

Mario Martinez, who went into the game for Alberth Elis in the 76th minutes, places his shot placed his volley perfectly in front of the goal and Maynor Figueroa beat Jones for the header and game-tying score.

The US men’s team have back-to-back 1-1 draws and only one victory in their last five matches.

It was announced on Monday that forward Joseph Gyau will be out with an injury until at least January with an injury sustained Friday against Ecuador.

You could say Corey was born to become a sports journalist. His father won a national championship coaching college soccer. His mother is a baseball fanatic who hasn't missed seeing an Orioles game since 1983 (literally, sometimes it's annoying). His great uncle was a big-time boxing promoter and his maternal grandfather was once a department head at the Baltimore Sun. Basically, sports and journalism run through his blood. He played just about every little league sports there was when he was a kid and was a multi-sport athlete in high school; even playing in the first-ever high school sanction Rugby game in the country. Eventually he retired from sports as an undefeated Maryland state Rugby champion as a high school senior. Perhaps lack of athletic talent has more to do with the retirement, but he will tell you that it more had to do with a great desire to jump right into media. Upon his graduation from University of Maryland, Baltimore County as a triple communications major, Corey started the So Much Sports network and has continued to grow his websites and continues to work to make them premier sports media outlets.
