Saad goes to Columbus in blockbuster deal

A tight cap situation has forced the defending champions to get rid of a key piece of their Stanley Cup team.

It seems like it was only yesterday that Brandon Saad and the Chicago Blackhawks were celebrating their Stanley Cup win. Now, the Blackhawks are taking care of business and look like they are going to be a very different team next year, starting with this shocking trade of Saad.

The Blackhawks sent Brandon Saad to the Columbus Blue Jackets in a mega-deal that involved the movement of seven players. The Blue Jackets will also receive forward Alex Broadhurst and defenseman Michael Paliotta. To get these players, the Blue Jackets will give the Blackhawks forwards Artem Anisimov, Marko Dano, Jeremy Morin, and Corey Tropp. They would also give the Blackhawks a fourth-round pick in the 2016 draft.

This is a trade that is definitely going to change the outlook and perception of the Blue Jackets. Depending on what line they place Saad in, they are either going to have one of the best first lines in the NHL, or they will add some quality to their second line. Right now, Ryan Johansen and Nick Foligno are on the top line for the Blue Jackets and both had over 70 points last season.

With the Blue Jackets coming up nine points shy of a playoff spot last year, having a guy like Saad who has won the Stanley Cup twice and can provide some offensive help for the stars has to make fans optimistic about a possible return to the playoffs.

On the Blackhawks’ side, this is only proving that they do not have the best cap situation. They are also at risk of losing Johnny Oduya, Antoine Vermette, and Brad Richards to free agency. It is certainly tough to stay at the top and the Blackhawks have shown this by only having a handful of players stay on the team for all three Cup runs.

While the Blackhawks gave up a very talented player in Saad, they did not get back nothing. When healthy, Anisimov is still a 40 point player and is only 27 years old so his best years could be still ahead of him. The rest of the players they got are young enough where they are still developing and can be impact players in the future.

Saad is only 22-years-old so if the Blue Jackets keep him, they can have a great young core of talent for many years to come assuming he lives up to what he has been doing on the Blackhawks. However, a lot of the players involved in this trade are still young so we probably will not know who really won this trade for a few years.
