Knicks Hornacek hire raises many questions

Who is the one changing their ways? Will Jeff Hornacek adopt the triangle offense that he's never run before, or has Phil Jackson opened up to more modern styles of coaching?

Who is the one changing their ways? Will Jeff Hornacek adopt the triangle offense that he’s never run before, or has Phil Jackson opened up to more modern styles of coaching?

He hasn’t officially signed a contract yet, so maybe there will be a change. And maybe there should be, because when it was announced that Jeff Hornacek would be named the Knicks’ next head coach, many fans were left scratching their heads at the decision.

Not only was he, not a name the Knicks were looking at, but he is not a guy with any connection to Phil Jackson, which is something he generally liked when making his hired. Jackson has said he wants to hire somebody who will run the triangle offense. Hornacek doesn’t. He has his own style and system that he runs.

What Hornacek does bring to the Knicks is good coaching experience. The former Phoenix suns coach brings an offensive mind. He uses a modern system that comes with a lot of picks and rolls plays.

Maybe Hornacek so willing to be the next coach of the Knicks that he’s willing to scrap what he knows and adopt the triangle offense? That is another major question the team is going to face next season.

Or maybe Jackson has finally decided that his way may not be the only way to for a basketball team to succeed, especially the way the game has changed these past few years.

Appearing on SiriusXM NBA radio, former Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy said I have heard that he won’t be required to run the triangle offense. Which is smart from the standpoint that he never taught it before. So you don’t want to come in trying something have never played or taught.”

In that case, Hornacek will be able to run his own modern style of playing. He will be able to feel more comfortable starting a new job with a system that has worked before.

Also, Hornacek will have to tweak and work with superstar Carmelo Anthony, as he will have his own say in the coaching. While Anthony may not take over as much control as other basketball superstars. He still will force other changes when it comes to making plays and how much time his teammates have. It will be up to Hornacek to control the situation and make sure his plays are getting out. Also, it’s up to him how much playing time Kristaps Porzingis gets as he enters his second season.

When fans look back at this hiring, it will be a big moment in Phil Jackson’s Knicks career. Can he actually get together a team with a new coach and a bunch of young players? How much impact Hornacek will have on everything from the plays to the coaching the young stars will also determine the future of Jackson who so far has done nothing special with the team. Nothing has changed for the past several years. This latest move will truly determine Jackson’s Knicks career.
