Knute RockneKnute Rockne

It’s been a long, long time since Knute Rockne was roaming the sidelines of a college football game but he is still the standard coaches are held to. Knute Rockne won four national championship with the Fighting Irish, making them the national powerhouse they are today. He coaches only 12 seasons before his tragic death in a plane crash but went an incredible 105-12-5. While Rockne was not the first coach to use the forward pass in football, he popularized it. Before Rockne teams passing attacks mostly consisted of very short pitches or shovel passes to stationary receivers but Rockne was the first to open up offense and showcase the potency of the forward pass. His teams went undefeated five times and lose more than one game just twice. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951.
