“Arrogant, pompous, obnoxious, vain, cruel, verbose, a showoff. There’s no question that I’m all of those things,” Howard Cosell once said of himself. Cosell is still the standard of sports journalism today with his incredible ability to tell the truth, but be fair to everybody involved. He was so versatile too, with the ability to cover any sport; boxing, football, the Olympics, college sports, basketball, hockey; it didn’t matter. The man studied, dissected events and provided honest analysis while being incredibly entertaining with his quick wit and sarcasm. Cosell was celebrated by TV Guide as the All-Time Best Sportscaster in it’s issue celebrating 40 years of television and was ranked as one of the 50 Greatest TV Stars of All-Time. Certainly, Cosell was known for his various feuds with both athletes and other members of the media because of his ego, but that was what made him so great. He never let somebody push him around when he was trying to get the story. He simply would tell it like it is.
