Joe Louis

The great long-time heavyweight champion was a megastar in boxing. Joe Louis fought and beat every big name he faced during his prime and for his career went 66-3-1 with 52 knockout victories. From 1936 to 1950, he had an 11-year heavyweight title reign that only ended after a brief retirement forced him to vacate his belt. Louis successfully defended his title 26 times, winning 22 of those fights by knockout. Six of those knockouts came in the first round of those fights. Though Louis made his name known in boxing, he actually broke golf’s color barrier in America by appearing under a sponsor’s exemption in a PGA event in 1952.
