George Steinbrenner

While perhaps one of the most polarizing figures in all of sports, there is no denying George Steinbrenner left his mark on both baseball and sports all together. While some may have hated his outspokenness and perceived over-involvement in the Yankee’s operation, Steinbrenner did everything with the intention of winning championships. He wasn’t one of those owners who just didn’t care and looked at the team as a source of money. He was willing to spend whatever it took to get a World Series winning team. For a team that was forever loaded with all-time greats, Steinbrenner was always the face of the franchise. He was “The Boss.” While rich with history, the Yankees were struggling under CBS ownership until he bought them in 1973. But in the 38 years from then until Steinbrenner’s retirement and death in 2010, the Yankees went 4,003-2,617 (.604), won eight World Series, won three more AL Pennants, and won 16 American League East division titles, all while making the Yankees the most popular, relevant and valuable sports team in the world.
