Fury-Wilder needs to happen as soon as possible

By: Damon Sloan

It was clearly a very staged event but when Tyson Fury walked into the ring and had a face-to-face showdown with Deontay Wilder after he knocked out Artur Szpilka to retain his WBC world heavyweight championship it created the buzz that the heavyweight division needed. With Wladimir Klitschko dethroned as the top heavyweight fights in the world, Fury and Wilder are the two hottest boxers in the division. Because of that and because the two could hype up a fight with their words as well as any other fighters in the world could, the fight has to happen and it has to happen as soon as possible.

Fury is contractually obligated to have a rematch against Klitschko and Wilder will have to fight WBC No. 1 contender Alexander Povetkin next or else he will be stripped of the belt, but after those fights, nothing should stop them from getting in the ring.

After Wilder knocked Szpilka out Fury walked into the ring and said, “There’s only one Fury!” and proceeded to say he will beat Wilder like he beat Klitschko and called him a bum. Naturally, Wilder did not take kind to those words while he was trying to relish in the fact that he was successful in his third-straight title defense. Wilder snapped back, calling fury a “phony man” and claimed that he will “baptize him.”

It was clear that Fury was brought into the ring with the intention of having him yell at Wilder, but it worked. They hyped the fight up and have fight fans calling for it now. They are two massively powerful, undefeated heavyweight champions and both are great talkers. What’s not to love?

Hopefully, the fight does not happen way after it should. Hopefully it does not take the turn of Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao or even worse, become like the Mike Tyson – Roy Jones Jr. fight that never happened.

The boxing’s heavyweight division might not be as strong as it was in it’s heyday, but with a dominant American Champion on the scene with a brash Brit who wants to claim the undisputed throne, it is a juice story that will draw interest and the fight needs to be made as soon as possible.
